Lovely Log Cabin Tote Bags!

Beginners, experts and all of us in between were welcome!

Our Theme this year was “Scrap Therapy” – come for a day of using your scraps in a relaxed atmosphere to make something beautiful!  We offered three concurrent sessions in the morning, three concurrent sessions in the afternoon.

Location: Bittinger Fire Hall, 176 Brenneman Road, Bittinger, MD

Directions: from Rt. 495 in Bittinger, turn onto Brenneman Road. The fire hall is about 200 yards ahead on the right.     39.600121° N79.221135° W

Morning Concurrent Workshop Sessions: 

(9:00 am to noon)

Tossed 9-Patch

Instructor: Sue O’Neal
Cost: $30 per person, bring your own fabric scraps, cutting tools and sewing machine with heavy extension cord (more info will be sent to you after you sign up for the class.)

Participants will make a Tossed Nine Patch quilt top.  They will rotary cut block patches, assemble nine patch blocks using a standard ¼” seam allowance on their sewing machine, modify these blocks and rearrange them into the tossed nine patch format.  Blocks will be assembled and borders will be measured, cut and attached as time allows.


Log Cabin Tote Bag

Instructor: Nancy Hoffman

Cost of class $25 – bring your own fabric scraps, cutting tools and sewing machine with heavy extension cord (more info will be sent to you after you sign up for the class.)

Participants will cut and sew a “Log Cabin” quilt block that will be incorporated in making a handy Tote Bag.


10 Minute Block

Instructor: Elizabeth Sheppard

Cost of class $30 – bring your own fabric scraps, cutting tools and sewing machine with heavy extension cord (more info will be sent to you after you sign up for the class.)

Students will learn how to make a three seam “10 Minute Block” and incorporate the blocks into a table runner. They will also learn how to make the blocks look different by turning the edges of the block and stitching with their favorite decorative stitch.  Sashing and borders will be added as desired.


Afternoon Concurrent Workshop Sessions: 
(12:30 pm to 3:30 pm)

 “So You Think You Want to Quilt”

Presenter: Sue O’Neal

Cost of class $20 – all instruction and practice materials provided.

This class offers information, discussion and some minor hands-on work.  You will receive a review of what it entails to make a quilt including fabric selection, threads, what to look for in a sewing machine, various quilting tools and much more.  You will have a demo and allow some practice of rotary cutters, rulers and basic quarter inch seams.  Included will be a discussion about piecing, appliqué and actual quilting.  There will be sewing machines available with some scrap fabric for practice if so desired.


Fabric-Wrapped Baskets

Instructor: Maggi Coene
Cost: $50 per person, bring your own sewing machine capable of using a zig zag stitch with heavy extension cord, everything else is included.
Great for beginners and experienced quilters, as long as they know how to use their machines.


English Paper Piecing

Cost: $40 per person, all materials included.

A Take-Along Project, no sewing machine needed!  This technique is for those who love hand work.  It is a wonderful take along  project, very accurate and fairly easy.
