Joyce & Ralph Fitzwater own this beautiful barn quilt. This custom design schoolhouse barn quilt with a rainbow triangle border is a tribute to both the location, at the approximate location of the former Chadderton School on the road by the same name, as well as the Fitzwater family’s legacy of driving schools buses in Garrett County.

Schoolhouse block at the corner of Chadderton School and Pysell Crosscut.

The former Chadderton school is mentioned in a book compiled by Jean Grose and Alice Eary. They write that in 1892, John Friend requested that the building be moved 3/4 mile west to a point on the Oakland-Swanton Rd (Route 495) and the new location was the NE corner of Chadderton School Road and Pysell Crosscut Road. The history goes on to state that it was the intention of the Board to consolidate the Chadderton and Steiding Schools, but their efforts were unsuccessful and in 1907 the Board hired J.M. Grim to erect a new building at Chadderton for $550. Chadderton remained open until 1929. There were 7 grades. The last names listed as attending include many familiar Garrett County names: Chadderton, DeWitt, Friend, Groves, Hardesty, Lohr, Tasker, Uphole, Cormany, Junkins, and King. See article, below.

Beitzel Corporation assisted with mounting the barn quilt square.
